Department of Prosthetics

Under Mr R I Nairn and Mrs H B Phillips, I worked in all aspects of prosthetics, including minor pre-prosthetic oral surgery, as well as conservative and periodontal care. In addition, I attended Consultant clinics and clinical demonstrations.

Department of Oral Surgery

Gained experience in extractions and other minor oral surgical procedures under both local and general anaesthesia and intravenous sedation, under the direction of Mrs H Jenrick for Professor G L Howe. I assisted in Mr J F Towers’ Consultant
Diagnostic Clinic and spent one session per week at the Hospital Reception Clinic.

Again, I supervised undergraduate students in the teaching clinic.

Sept 1977- Feb 1978
Department of Orthodontic and Children’s Dentistry

Treatment of children for a wide range of conservative and preventive dentistry using both local and relative analgesia. I assisted in the orthodontic and casualty clinics. I was under the direction of Professor W J B Houston and Mr G Roberts.

Sept 1977 – Feb 1978
Department of Periodontology

Attendance at Consultant Clinics at which treatment planning and specialist treatment was carried out. I was allocated patients with advanced periodontal disease requiring all aspects of periodontal therapeutic techniques. I diagnosed new patients referred to the clinic and treated a wide range of periodontal diseases
including acute conditions. I was working under the guidance of the Consultants, Mr W I R Davies, Mr A B Wade, Mr J B Keiser, Mr V Ward and Mr J Zamet.

August 1976 – Feb. 1977
Guy’s Hospital, London

House Surgeon in the Department of Conservation

I gained experience primarily in the Conservation Department where treatment wascarried out on patients referred by Professor A.H. Rowe from his Consultant’s Clinic.

All aspects of conservative dental treatment were carried out, particularly crown and bridge, inlay and endodontic work. In addition, I supervised undergraduate students in the Conservation Teaching Clinic. Some weekends were spent as locum Resident
House Surgeon at Guy’s Hospital.

Duties were primarily concerned with the in-patient care of patients as well as the admission of emergency cases.

Postgraduate Education

January 2004 – present

Regular private and personalised teaching sessions organised specifically by Dr Andrew Dawood BDS MSc MRD RCS, 45 Wimpole Street London W1G 8SB, who is an accredited lecturer to Nobel Biocare, (Manufacture of Branemark Implants) and accredited to certify dentists as to competence and course attendance.  Particular emphasis is placed on treatment planning and coordinating the surgical phase of Implant placement to include soft tissue and bone grafting, bone argumentation and sinus lift procedures along with the new technique of immediate loading. Great emphasis has been placed in all aspects of restorative techniques related to implants to include gingival tissue manipulation, to produce and enhance implant appearance in the aesthetic zone.

More recently teaching has been received in the technique of computer guided implant placement with Nobel Bioguide and Zygomatic Implant placement

September 1985 – August 1989

Attendance on a four year one day per month “Continual Course in Restorative Dentistry” under the direction of Mr Michael Wise, Wimpole Street, London.

This course exposed me to both patient and practice management in the private sector. All aspects of dentistry, particularly the interdisciplinary approach to Advanced Restorative Dentistry were studied. Additionally, invited guest speakers from around the world lectured in small participative groups, on their specialist subjects.

September 1983 – August 1984

Attendance one day per month on a Course in Restorative Dentistry under the personal direction of Professor E. Levinson (University of Pretoria, S.A.), in Cavendish Square, London.  The emphasis of this course was on the integration and combination of the disciplines of Periodontics, Endodontics, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics (including Precision Attachments) and Orthodontics in relation to the treatment of the Severely Compromised Dentition. As well as learning the theory behind this advanced form of dentistry, several cases being treated by Professor Levinson were followed through to completion.
